The 20s... One of the southern cities of Russia.

The sun is shining brightly, festively, Red Army soldiers are marching, a brass band is playing, and banners are red. A demonstration is underway. Peaceful life is improving in the city.


But now a crime has been committed. Dr. Klembowski and his wife were murdered in an apartment carefully locked from the outside. Who's the killer? Why did you kill? Where did he go? All these issues will have to be solved by very young, inexperienced, but ardently passionate criminal investigation officers. A plan of action has been worked out, and the daredevils are already rushing somewhere and inadvertently exposing themselves to the bullets of a veteran bandit, who cocks the trigger, muttering the words of a song: "What is the virgin crying about, what is she crying about..." And running after him through the basement, where under heavy arches in pitch darkness only the sound of footsteps, cracking shots were fired and the order of the group leader: "Take them alive!.."


The film "Especially Dangerous", directed by S. Mamilov at the Odessa Film Studio, based on a script he co—wrote with E. Smirnov, is a detective story. Its action takes place during the NEP...


More than once or twice, all this "NEP" exoticism has been played out and repeated on the screen (including in detective films) — striking contrasts, gaudiness and pretentiousness of interiors and clothes, languid tangos sounding in drinking establishments where "posh" crooks are having fun.


Fortunately, the authors of the film "Especially Dangerous" did not follow this path. The visual structure of the film narrative is extremely concise and strict. Perhaps it was precisely this calm manner of work by the cameraman G. Karyuk — the absence of external effects, shooting in long chunks, an almost stationary camera — and some asceticism in the work of the artist A. Tokarev that the director needed to achieve the main thing. And the main thing in "Especially Dangerous" is not just an entertaining intrigue related to the capture of bandits, but an attempt to carefully examine, first of all, the process of formation of the characters, beliefs, and views of those who guarded the peaceful lives of citizens of the young Soviet republic.


Detective intrigue is present here rather as a reason to escalate and resolve the dispute of five young CID officers, This is a dispute about the attitude towards the case they serve. It is no coincidence, therefore, that the film begins not with a crime, but with a festive demonstration, with a scene when we get to know the characters of the film in a calm atmosphere.


This is a former street kid, a very young Stas (V. Vikhrov). Delicate Klimov, a recent high school student (B. Zhiganov). Romantic and dreamer Gontar (A. Skoryakin). Seleznev (N. Sektimenko) is harsh and peremptory in his judgments. And finally, Silin (E. Stitch), who believes that they are entitled to special privileges for the dangerous work that he and his comrades do.
